Speech Therapist vs Voice Coach: What’s The Difference?

Speech therapists (speech-language pathologists) are medical professionals qualified to diagnose and treat physiological, neurological, and developmental communication disorders. While voice coaches focus on performance and skill enhancement, speech therapists manage complex medical conditions, swallowing disorders, and structural vocal pathologies.

Key Differences in Scope:

>Medical & Clinical Expertise: Speech therapists treat diagnosed pathologies such as vocal cord nodules, paralysis, or damage from injury, stroke, or surgery. They work in medical settings and often collaborate with laryngologists to rehabilitate the voice.

>Beyond the Voice: Unlike voice coaches, speech therapists are trained to address:

Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia): Assessment and rehabilitation of safe swallowing.

>Language & Cognitive Disorders: Managing challenges related to language delays, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), dementia, or cognitive-communication issues.

>Neurological Conditions: Treating speech and voice changes associated with conditions like Parkinson’s disease.

>Developmental & Speech Issues: Speech therapists address articulation defects (e.g., lisps), stuttering, and developmental language milestones in children that fall outside the scope of a performance coach.

While both professionals may use similar exercises to improve breath support or vocal quality, a speech therapist is the appropriate choice when there is an underlying medical, structural, or functional impairment requiring clinical intervention.

How Voice Coach Sallyb Can Help

While I am not a licensed speech therapist, my work as a professional voice coach frequently brings me into contact with clients facing speech impediments. My studio is often a sanctuary for singers dealing with speech impediments. Many carry the heavy emotional weight of childhood teasing and low confidence. Watching a student break through those vocal barriers, conquer their speech challenges, and finally sing with absolute freedom is the most rewarding part of my work. It proves that the human voice is incredibly resilient.

Renowned Vocalists Have Famously Overcome Childhood Speech impediments

Because the brain processes singing and speaking differently, many performing artists find that musical rhythm and melodic phrasing completely bypass their speech blocks. Some artists that famously overcame their speech challenges include: Ed Sheeran, Chris Brown, Sam Smith, Kendrick Lamar, Marilyn Monroe, Shania Twain and Amanda Mammana. So don't be discouraged. With time and patience we can unlock your full potential.

Through structured vocal training, breath work, and technical conditioning, I have successfully helped numerous individuals overcome these barriers. This guidance not only unlocks their ability to sing beautifully but also helps them heal from the pain of childhood ridicule, transforming their relationship with their own voice and boosting their confidence. There are no limits to what you can achieve. I believe that and I pray that you also believe it.

Yours in music,

-Sallyb.
